{"id":108,"date":"2020-01-21T14:27:59","date_gmt":"2020-01-21T20:27:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ableheatcool.biz\/hvac-blog\/?p=108"},"modified":"2020-01-21T14:29:29","modified_gmt":"2020-01-21T20:29:29","slug":"the-furnace-wont-shut-off","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ableheatcool.biz\/hvac-blog\/the-furnace-wont-shut-off\/","title":{"rendered":"The Furnace Won\u2019t Shut Off"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>First, we need to determine what part of the furnace is not shutting off\u2026 is it the blower fan that\u2019s blowing continuously or are the gas furnace burners or electric heat strips in an Electric Furnace known as an Air Handler Unit (AHU) not cycling off?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since\nthese are two separate issues, we\u2019ll address them separately: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1)\n&nbsp;The Blower Fan: the blower fan\u2019s\nfunction is to push the air (heated or not) through the duct system.&nbsp; In normal operation, the fan should be turning\noff as the gas burners or electric heat strips cycle. If it is not shutting off,\na common cause may be as simple as checking to see if the thermostat fan\nsetting is on AUTO.&nbsp; If not, switch it\nfrom On to Auto.&nbsp; If this does not solve\nthe issue, it could be the thermostat or control related.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If\ncool\/cold air is blowing out, first check the air filter; a dirty furnace\nfilter is one of the biggest causes for a furnace to continuously run or \u201cshort\ncycle\u201d. &nbsp;It restricts airflow across the\nheat exchanger which causes it to get too hot then the furnace goes into the cool\ndown mode, will run the fan continuously and will cause your furnace to blow\ncold air. &nbsp;When the AHU heat strips are\nnot coming or the gas furnace pilot light won\u2019t light or stay lit, may be\ncontrol related. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><em>When to call for a Service Technician to diagnose the problem:<\/em>  If it won\u2019t light or it keeps going out, or the AHU heating strips are not generating heat <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-text-align-left has-very-dark-gray-color\"><a>2) Heat Won\u2019t Shut Off: when hot air continues to blow through the registers and the<\/a> temperature rises past the thermostat setting, the furnace burners or electric heat strips are not turning off. Check the thermostat by turning it lowering the temperature setting to see if furnace or AHU shuts off. If not, the thermostat batteries may need replaced. &nbsp;If changing batteries did not solve the issue, it could be time to call a HVAC service technician to diagnose and repair your furnace correctly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\nare many reasons your furnace could be running more than usual and most of the\ncauses fall back to regular maintenance.
